Got a Tip?

Jarvis Cocker Hopes His ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ Narration Will Appear On the European DVD

Wishful thinking? As you’ll recall, ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker not only wrote some songs for Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (though only one is included in the final film; you can hear it here, he actually co-wrote it with Anderson), he actually voiced the film’s narration too.

But because of his big thick English accent, or at least that’s how Fox perceived it, the narration in the film was cut. “They showed that to test audiences in the U.S. and they were very bamboozled. So I’ve ended up on the cutting-room floor. I tried to enunciate clearly,” Cocker told the London Times early this year.

But speaking to Quietus, Jarvis hopes the European version of the DVD will contain his narration.

“At one point I did a narration that was through the whole film, but they showed it to test audiences in North America and they ended up cutting it. I believe that my contribution will end up the DVD extra when it comes out in Europe.”

Maybe? We can’t remember where, but Anderson recently said the narration just didn’t really work, not because of Cocker, but just because it didn’t really fit the picture, but it might be interesting to see a slightly different version if it does happen. We enjoyed “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” It’s a bit slight, but a charming film and opens this weekend (November 13) in limited release and then goes into wide release the following weekend on November 20. There’s actually nationwide free screenings happening in the U.S., but they’re going fast.

Next up for Cocker in the movie world is writing songs for Russell Brand’s “Get Him To The Greek,” which is essentially about a rock star who falls off the wagon and causes hell for the record label assistant in charge of him (Jonah Hill). Diddy plays the record label mogul which should be a fun laugh. That one’s due June 11, 2010.
