Though we’re still awaiting a firm date from Radius TWC for their planned spring 2014 release of James Gray‘s “The Immigrant,” over in France the film is gearing up to hit cinemas this month. And that means plenty of new looks at the movie well in advance of when many of us over here will get a chance to see it, which willl definitely hold us for now.
Today comes the first of what is said to be three character posters for the movie, this one centering on Jeremy Renner, wearing some spectacularly smoky guyliner. What’s with the makeup? Well, he plays a magician in this turn-of-the-century drama, who crosses paths with Ewa (Marion Cotillard), a Polish immigrant with a sick sister who falls into the clutches of a conniving pimp (Joaquin Phoenix), who exploits her desperation to sell her into prostitution. Moving at its own measured pace, the result is a film that we called in Cannes “contained, restrained, thoughtful filmmaking” and it’s basically the sort of drama we aren’t served too often at all these days.
