Joe Cornish Spoke To John Boyega About An 'Attack The Block' Sequel Just Recently

Released in 2011, Joe Cornish’s sci-fi film, “Attack the Block,” stands as one of the best films in the genre of the past decade. Carried largely by an incredible lead performance from a then-unknown John Boyega, ‘Attack’ is a rare original film that garnered a cult following and has yet to spark any real sequel talk. However, according to the film’s director, a sequel might still happen.

Speaking to the Script Apart podcast (via Empire), Cornish explained that a sequel to the film has been discussed for years and actually was brought up fairly recently.

“We’ve got ideas,” Cornish revealed. “I met with John a couple of months ago to talk about it. We’ve always had ideas after the first one. But obviously we’ve both been busy doing different things.”

But those concerned about the long delay between the first film and a potential sequel shouldn’t be worried. He added, “In a way, the longer you leave it, the more interesting it is. So that’s all I’ll say.”

Cornish also spoke about the enduring legacy of the film, especially in light of recent events with John Boyega going viral for an impassioned speech about Black Lives Matter in the wake of the brutal George Floyd killing.

“The movie’s nearly ten years old now, and it’s trying to address issues that were fairly ingrained then, and have certainly stuck around,” the filmmaker said. “At the time when it came out, it put a lot of people’s backs up, because it has a very unusual protagonist and arc.”

Cornish added, “It’s wonderful that people are revisiting the film…Most of all, it’s a moment for John, and it’s a moment for hopefully some social change. To be a tiny little part of something that I hope is much, much bigger is exciting.”

Even if a sequel to “Attack the Block” moves forward, it’ll likely be a little while before we see it. Currently, Cornish is busy developing a new TV series for Edgar Wright and Netflix, in which he’ll direct. “Attack the Block” can be rented on VOD and you can see the trailer for the 2011 film below:
