Got a Tip?

Joel Edgerton To Write And Star In Thriller ‘Felony’

nullHe's firmly on his way to the A-list after the critically acclaimed "Warrior," not to mention his upcoming starring roles in "The Great Gatsby" and Kathryn Bigelow's Bin Laden movie, but Australian actor Joel Edgerton's ambitions don't stop at simply appearing on screen. With his brother Nash and several other filmmakers from back home, he set up collective Blue Tongue Films, who've been behind films like "Animal Kingdom," and he has been active as a writer and even director, penning "The Square" with Nash back in 2008, and making his directorial debut with the short "Monkeys" last year.

And that's only the beginning. The actor sold a John Hughes-esque script called "One Night Stand" to New Regency back at the start of the year, he developed the idea for David Michod's next film, "The Rover," which will star Robert Pattinson, and only yesterday we reported that he was working again with his brother on expanding their 2005 short film "Lucky" into a feature. And now there's one more to add to the pile, as The Hollywood Reporter announced that the actor will star in the thriller "Felony," which he's also written, and will produce. The plot will involve a decorated police officer (Edgerton) who runs over a cyclist on his way back from a bust, only to lie about the accident, leading to a spiral of worsening events.

This sounds like it's the crime movie he told us about at Sundance this year: at the time, the actor said "I wrote a movie which we want to make in Australia…It's a crime drama that's kind of 'Rashomon' style, but it's set within the police force, and we'll hopefully make that this year." And it looks like that'll indeed be the case: director Matthew Saville (who made the critically acclaimed "Noise") will get underway on the project in November. There's no other word on casting right now, but we're sure it'll become clearer over the next few months.
