Got a Tip?

Joel Kinnaman Says ‘Suicide Squad 2’ Will Be “More Grounded”

Like it or not, Warner Bros. is going to release a sequel to “Suicide Squad.” Somehow, the not-so-great film was embraced by audiences, grossing almost $750 million worldwide. Hell, the film even won an Oscar! With bona fides like that, Warner Bros. would be completely crazy to not take another dip in the ‘Squad’ pool. However, since a decent amount of time has gone by, one of the stars of the film is ready to have a little #realtalk about the film.

While promoting his upcoming Netflix series, “Altered Carbon,” “Suicide Squad” star Joel Kinnaman was asked by Yahoo where he thought the WB/DC film “went wrong.”

“In the third act,” Kinnaman replied. “It was a great set-up, great characters. I think when we do the second one I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a more grounded version of the film. The characters are so extreme it could be more effective if we saw less sorcery. I think the characters become more extreme if you see them in conjunction with real people.”

You can see the pained look in Kinnaman’s eyes having to talk about that first “Suicide Squad” film. It’s clear that he’s giving a very diplomatic answer when it comes to criticisms of the blockbuster. That being said, his view that the entire third act didn’t work is definitely true and refreshingly honest. But let’s be real for a second – there were a lot of things wrong with “Suicide Squad” that don’t involve sorcery.

He is still correct that when the team of human mercenaries and psychopaths went up against two magical deities, the film just didn’t work. In the sequel, set to be directed by Gavin O’Connor, the Squad would benefit from having lower stakes and a villain that actually makes sense for them to fight with their baseball bats, guns, and swords.

Let’s just hope that the next film has better writing, editing, acting, and please for the love of everything holy, don’t include a pop song every 30 seconds.
