According to the Irish Times, John Carney is back in the director’s chair to helm the oddball comedy, “Town House,” which is due to start shooting in August. As we previously reported, the film is based on the book by Tish Cohen and is about a man who “lives with his teenage son in a historic Boston townhouse that he inherited from his rock star father. With royalties from his father’s work dwindling, the man is forced to come to terms with his life… and a call girl strikes up a friendship with the man.”
Zach Galifianakis and Amy Adams were in early talks to join this one and it appears they are still attached. The script is being adapted by Doug Wright (who penned the unmade “Bunny Lake Is Missing” screenplay) and Carney and the film will produced under Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free banner.
But it appears that Carney, who initially joined the production in 2007 and then left when the writer’s strike hit, hasn’t been idle in the downtime. He’s gone off and shot the low-budget comedy “Zonad” co-written by his brother Kiernan. The film is set to open in Ireland on March 19th, but we don’t see it showing up on this side of the ocean. The comedy is a distinctly Irish affair about a man who visits the town of Ballymoran and is thought to be an extraterrestrial. Variety has described the ’50s set film as equal parts “Pleasantville,” “The Quiet Man” and old “Carry On” films. Sounds intriguingly quirky, but we’ll have to wait for that one appear on DVD to check it out.
As for Carney, his plate is back to being full. In addition to “Town House” he also has a project in development with Judd Apatow, but we’ll have wait a bit to see what comes of it
