‘Tenet’ Star John David Washington Discusses The Similarities Between Spike Lee & Christopher Nolan

Spike Lee and Christopher Nolan would seemingly be examples of two filmmakers that are very different in their styles and yet have both become iconic enough that one name is all you need to describe them, with “Spike” and “Nolan” adequate enough. And yet, according to one actor that has worked on high-profile films with both, there are some major similarities that make them great at their jobs.

Speaking to MovieMaker, actor John David Washington, who worked with Lee on “BlacKkKlansman” and Nolan on the new film, “Tenet,” talked about how the work ethics of both men is a clear key to their successful filmmaking careers.

“With Spike and Chris, they could shoot all day if they could,” explained Washington. “And it’s not for the sake of shooting, it’s to make sure they get it. It’s to make sure they’re putting the best product forward.”

He continued, “Where they are in their careers, they don’t have anything to prove, but they work as if they’re slept on. They work as if they’re underdogs or something — it’s kind of crazy and encouraging to see that no matter where you are, or the success that you’re receiving, or if you are on an A-list, whatever that means, it comes down to the work.”

It isn’t controversial to say that both Lee and Nolan are hardworking filmmakers. Both have had long careers that have started with more indie fare and have now become much bigger in size and scale. This year alone, both men are releasing massive films, though decidedly different in style and tone, with “Da 5 Bloods” and “Tenet.” That being said, due to their work ethic and skill (obviously), both filmmakers have made each of their projects “must-see” no matter what the plot or cast includes.

If you want to see Lee’s latest, “Da 5 Bloods” is now available on Netflix. But if you’re keen on checking out “Tenet,” there’s a long list of things you have to take into consideration before you try to find a ticket, as it’s being released in select markets all around the world.
