Got a Tip?

Composer John Williams Says He’s Done With ‘Star Wars’ After ‘Episode IX’

There are a few filmmakers that will always be linked to “Star Wars.” Clearly, that includes George Lucas, considering he’s the creator of the entire universe. But another name that is always thought of as synonymous with the franchise is composer John Williams. However, it looks like the relationship between Williams and “Star Wars” might be coming to an end.

Talking to California radio station KUSC, the composer said, “We know J.J. Abrams is preparing one [‘Star Wars’ movie] now that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me.”

Now, before fans break down into ugly sobs, there’s a little bit of context that needs to be addressed. By all accounts, the untitled ‘Episode IX’ that Williams is referring to is supposed to be the end of the Skywalker Saga that has continued on since 1977. While it’s sad to know that Williams is leaving the franchise, it’s amazing that he’s been able to score each of the nine “episodes” and will be finishing the series he began.

Also, keep in mind that the man making the music doesn’t even really care for his creation. Back in 2016, we covered a story that featured John Williams openly talking about how he didn’t feel his work on “Star Wars” was “memorable” in any way. In fact, the composer admits to not even watching the finished films. Of course, to “Star Wars” fans, that’s absolutely preposterous to think that Williams’ score is not very memorable. If anything, the man has created what could be argued is the most memorable score of all time.

All that being said, fans of Williams and of “Star Wars” wouldn’t want the composer to be forced to score what he doesn’t feel passionate about. Apparently, he’s been doing that for the franchise for the past four decades. Instead, let’s hear Williams move on to other films, and bring in some new blood to the galaxy far, far away.
