'Joker: Folie á Deux': Todd Phillips Reveals New First-Look Photos For His Upcoming Sequel

Although production officially wrapped on Todd Phillips‘ “Joker: Folie á Deux” earlier this week, it’s not in theaters for another year and a half. That’s right: Warner Bros. currently has the sequel to the 2019’s “Joker” slated for an October 24, 2024 release, and that’s tentative to change. But for fans of Phillips’ and Joaquin Phoenix‘s take on the iconic Batman villain, here are a couple of new and official first-look photos from “Folie á Deux” to tide you over.

EW reports that Phillips promoted his production wrap on Instagram with two new stills from the movie: one of Phoenix and one of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. “That’s a wrap,” Phillips wrote on the post. “Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.” As for the pics, Phoenix in full Joker make-up isn’t anything new, but the close-up of Gaga as Quinn marks one of the first official first-look at her supervillain. Not a lot to go on for fans, but the still does indicate that Phillips continues the same aesthetic he built in his 2019 film.

“Folie á Deux” sees Phoenix’s Joker begin his demented romance with his psychologist, Gaga’s Dr. Harleen Quinzel, while in prison. The film also stars Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from the 2019 film, Brandon GleesonCatherine KeenerJacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey. Phillips co-writes his sequel with Scott Silver, as he did for “Joker.”

The addition of Gaga to “Folie á Deux” in 2022 made anticipation for Phillip’s sequel even bigger. “Joker” made over $1 billion at the global box office, with Phoenix winning his first Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck/Joker. But Gaga brings singular star power to the role of Harley Quinn. Gaga is fresh off her fourth Oscar nomination for the “Top Gun: Maverick” original song “Hold My Hand.” In addition, she won Best Original Song in 2019 for “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born,” and was nominated for Best Actress for that movie, too.

But there’s still a long time to wait before “Joker: Folie á Deux” hits theaters or even until fans get a trailer for the upcoming film. But maybe Phillips will have a teaser ready for the Fall film season. “Joker: Folie á Deux” hits theaters on October 24, 2024. Take a look at the new first-look photos below.
