‘Joker: Folie À Deux’: Todd Phillips Says Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Is Similar To Charles Manson

When it was announced that Lady Gaga was cast in “Joker: Folie À Deux” as the iconic Harley Quinn, there were many who were shocked. Sure, she looks the part, but Gaga’s acting credits have been a bit hit or miss. However, according to director Todd Phillips, the singer-turned-actor brings something special to this unique interpretation of Harley Quinn.

Speaking in a recent interview with Empire, Todd Phillips broke down what fans can expect with Lady Gaga’s interpretation of Harley Quinn. Much like the first “Joker” film, “Joker: Folie À Deux” takes inspiration from the comics but definitely goes its own way. And when it comes to the film’s depiction of Harley Quinn, Phillips and Co. took inspiration from a real life killer.

“While there are some things that people would find familiar in her, it’s really Gaga’s own interpretation, and Scott [Silver, co-writer] and I’s interpretation,” Phillips said. “She became the way how [Charles] Manson had girls that idolized him. The way that sometimes these [imprisoned murderers] have people that look up to them. There are things about Harley in the movie that were taken from the comic books, but we took it and molded it to the way we wanted it to be.”

We all know that Lady Gaga loves to go to great lengths to achieve her performance in a film. Back when she was in “House of Gucci,” Gaga talked about how she would watch specific animals to give her inspiration. As we get closer to the release of “Joker: Folie À Deux,” it’ll be interesting to hear about the methods she used to get into the deranged mindset of Harley Quinn.
