Jon Hamm Doesn't Think Don Draper Found Redemption At The End Of 'Mad Men'

We are approaching two years since the end of AMC’s critically acclaimed series “Mad Men.” After seven seasons, the series ended with a montage of all the main characters, including Don Draper, meditating on a hilltop with a grin. The scene then cuts to the famous Coca-Cola ad “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke.”

Many assume that it means that in Don Draper’s state of “enlightenment,” he came up with the famous Coca-Cola ad. Actor Jon Hamm doesn’t dispute those claims, but does want to clarify what he thinks Don Draper’s life is like after the ad. During an interview on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Hamm himself said, “I don’t think that stuck. I don’t think that Zen moment of understanding of anything really stuck. That leopard is not changing his spots. I think it was more about, he just had a really good idea for a commercial.”

Depending on your level of cynicism, Hamm’s explanation might not sit well with you. He also says that Draper probably didn’t live very long either. There are many fans that just hoped during the meditation, Draper realized the error of his ways and decided to turn over a new leaf. But series creator Matthew Weiner didn’t help clarify the ending immediately after the finale aired. He said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “But it was nice to sort of have your cake and eat it too, in terms of what is advertising, who is Don and what is that thing?” At least it wasn’t as ambiguous as “The Sopranos” finale, right?

So, what do you think? Was Draper a changed man, or did he go back to New York and continue his old ways? [Vulture]
