The original “Top Gun” is probably best known for the electric, charismatic performance from Tom Cruise, the soundtrack featuring some classic ‘80s songs, some incredibly quotable dialogue, and the single most fantastic beach volleyball scene in film history. The action, however, isn’t what drives people to revisit the film. It’s good, sure, but not show-stopping, by any means. Well, it appears “Top Gun: Maverick” is hoping that the action takes center stage.
In a new interview with CinemaBlend, actor Jon Hamm says that the technology and practical effects used in the upcoming ‘Top Gun’ sequel are going to be worth the ticket price all by themselves. In fact, if you’re a camera and effects nerd, you’ll likely be impressed by some of the behind-the-scenes technology used by director Joseph Kosinski and his crew.
“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” said Hamm. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”
Considering ‘Maverick’ sees the return of the first film’s star, Tom Cruise, the use of practical effects over CGI is a no-brainer. Cruise is probably best known, at this point in his career at least, as the guy that does his own stunts and always has to one-up himself with each new project. Just watch the last several “Mission: Impossible” films for proof on that. The man literally hangs off helicopters and jumps out of airplanes for the sake of practical effects.
But now that we know the technology used to create “Top Gun: Maverick” is state-of-the-art and Tom Cruise is coming back, really the only other thing needed to ensure another classic film is a brand-new volleyball scene in full 6K glory.
“Top Gun: Maverick” arrives in theaters on June 26, 2020.
