We’ve been anxiously awaiting the next major film from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts after he somehow made a Vietnam-era King Kong film not only good, but also just a hell of a lot of fun, with “Kong: Skull Island.” He’s been flirting with the video game world for a couple years now, as he gears up for (maybe) directing “Metal Gear Solid” and definitely directing the Sega vs. Nintendo series “Console Wars,” but now’s he has taken the dive completely with his commercial…err, “short film” for “Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds,” aka ‘PUBG.’
And joining Vogt-Roberts along for this live-action take on the battle royale-style bloodbath is one of his ‘Skull Island’ actors Jason Mitchell, best known for playing Easy-E in the great “Straight Outta Compton,” as well as in Sebastián Silva’s upcoming “Tyrel.”
In the short, Mitchell skydives into this battleground, along with a variety of other players and immediately begins the sprint to the closest location to find weapons. And in typical ‘PUBG’ fashion, he ends up with a frying pan. But don’t go sleeping on the frying pan, as Mitchell shows it can be a very valuable asset.
The short is fun, exciting, and even though there’s no dialogue, a story is very much present as Mitchell’s character does his best to survive against all odds, with The Contours’ “Do You Love Me?” playing in the background.
Sony clearly wants the world to know that there’s other games out there not called “Fortnite,” and would love for people to fork over some money for ‘PUBG.’ Maybe this fun little commercial will do just that. For as fun as “Fortnite” is, and yes it’s a blast, ‘PUBG’ is the same idea, if not a bit more detailed and far less cartoony. And yes, you can, in theory, win with just a frying pan.
