Joss Whedon To Write & Direct 'Batgirl'

There are two things Joss Whedon has been very vocal about — wanting a direct a Batman movie, and seeing more female lead tentpoles. Well, he’s going to address both of those concerns by jumping into a new project brewing at DC Films.

Variety reports that Whedon will write, direct, and produce “Batgirl.” Given that this is just coming to light, there’s no other news, but the movie will connect to the DC Films universe, and naturally involve other characters from Gotham. For Whedon — who has never been as fiercely loyal to Marvel as its very own fans — it’s a chance to finally do something with a DC Comics property, something he’s tried and failed to do in the past.

“Sure. I’d be like ‘I have all these joke ideas.’ And they’d be like ‘No, we don’t do that here.’ I desperately wanted to do a Batman film — who doesn’t? And I wanted to do Wonder Woman,” he said in 2015.

Moreover, it’s a chance for Whedon to directly address the issue of a lack of female-driven blockbusters, a topic he discussed at length a couple of years back, in particular how these superhero movies don’t always need to be the cut from the same cloth.

“The superhero story…it doesn’t have to be about one tortured billionaire. It can be a girl and her community, her crushes, her fears. We can evolve that genre more quickly if we come at it from different ways. It both makes sense commercially and artistically,” Whedon had said.

So, the hope is here that Whedon can do something really different with “Batgirl,” because, my God, we’ve had enough of what Zack Snyder has brought to the DC Films franchise.
