Ever since “Joy Ride” had its world premiere at SXSW in March, it’s been one of the summer’s most anticipated movies. Why’s that? Well, it’s raunchy, hilarious (our review praised it), and it’s helmed by “Crazy Rich Asians” writer Adele Lim in her feature directorial debut. Love crowd-pleasing comedies? “Joy Ride” may be the biggest one in theaters this summer.
And now the wait for the film to reach audiences is over: “Joy Ride” arrives next month, and Lionsgate has a brand-new red band trailer to help promote it. The film follows a pack of friends who embark on a trip to Asia that ends up being wilder than any of them ever dream of.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Joy Ride,” courtesy of Lionsgate:
The hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery centers on four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo, her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat, her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
“Joy Ride” stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The film also stars Ronny Chieng and Chris Pang from “Crazy Rich Asians,” Desmond Chiam, and Alexander Hodge.
As noted earlier, Adele Lim directs “Joy Ride” from a script by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao. The “Joy Ride” producing team includes Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen, Chevaparavatdumrong, Hsiao, and Lim.
So is “Joy Ride” an instant classic, as some already proclaim? Find out when the film hits theaters on July 7. Watch the new red band trailer for the film below.
