Judging by the poor box office of “Furiosa,” we’re not too sure if the studio is going to rush into production of a new film in the “Mad Max” franchise anytime soon. However, if a new film in the franchise is in the cards, perhaps filmmaker Justin Kurzel could take a stab at it.

Speaking in a new interview with Collider, filmmaker Justin Kurzel talked about a dream project he would like to work on. You see, Kurzel is Australian, and it’s clear he has a soft spot for the Australian franchise, “Mad Max.” In fact, Kurzel would love to talk to George Miller about the opportunity to maybe take a look at what the world looked like pre-“Mad Max.”
“I’ll tell you what, maybe because it was such a big influence, but I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first ‘Mad Max’ — what was that world with the Nightrider, pre- ‘Mad Max?’ Kurzel said. “I’ve always been very curious about that and very tempted to talk to George [Miller] about the possibility of a world that is pre- ‘Mad Max 1’ and what that is. That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time.”
He added, “It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too, that period.”
Typically, we’d say that a prequel is something that is likely not going to happen in a franchise. However, when you talk about “Mad Max,” prequels are what George Miller seems excited about most. After the success of ‘Fury Road,’ Miller talked about a couple of prequels he would like to work on. One of which is the aforementioned “Furiosa,” which was beloved by critics but a financial bomb at the box office. The second film is also a prequel to ‘Fury Road,’ but showing what Max was doing during the year or so leading up to that film.
Basically, Kurzel could be onto something interesting—going back even further than “Furiosa” to show what the world was like in a pre-“Mad Max” era. So, here’s to hoping that Kurzel and Miller have that discussion sometime.
In the meantime, you can see Justin Kurzel’s latest film, “The Order,” when it debuts in theaters on December 6.
