Got a Tip?

‘Kick-Ass’: Matthew Vaughn Says Reboot Will Be The Third Film In A Completely Different Trilogy

While the “Kick-Ass” film franchise has never been a massive blockbuster franchise, it does have a devoted fanbase, especially with those folks who love hard-R superhero stories. And while we knew that Matthew Vaughn and his production company have been working on a new ‘Kick-Ass’ film, we haven’t heard much about what it was going to be. Is it a reboot? A sequel? A reimagining? Well, the truth is that it’s something potentially more unique than that.

Speaking to Collider, Matthew Vaughn was promoting his new film, “Argylle.” And as you might imagine, the question about the status of “Kick-Ass” came up. It’s no surprise that Vaughn is excited by the opportunity of reimagining the “Kick-Ass” franchise, but not even the biggest fans would have guessed what the filmmaker has in mind. So, let’s see how he tries to explain his concept.

“We’re halfway through [the script]. There’s a very, very dare I say it… and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe,” teased Vaughn. “It is what, you know, ‘Kick-Ass’ was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing ‘Kick-Ass,’ which couldn’t be more ‘Kick-Ass.’”

So, what is this “whole new way” to make a “Kick-Ass” film? Well, Vaughn’s plan is to make the “Kick-Ass” reboot the third film of a brand-new trilogy.

“The trilogy will be ‘School Fight,’ this movie, let’s call it ‘Vram’ for the time being, and then ‘Kick-Ass,’ and they’re all connected,” the filmmaker said.

“School Fight” is a film that is already finished production, produced by Vaughn and directed by Damien Walters. “Vram” is a film that is apparently currently in production. And both of those films will be the lead-ins to whatever the new “Kick-Ass” is going to look like.

So, the easy speculation is that the “Kick-Ass” reboot will be meta in the sense that perhaps characters from the first two movies will be familiar with the “Kick-Ass” films (or comic books) and decide to become superheroes/villains. That is, again, pure speculation, but it would make sense and actually seems kinda fun. Regardless, it does sound as if the new “Kick-Ass” film will be something completely different and not really connected to the previous two movies, which featured a young teen turning himself into a vigilante superhero.

As for when we might see the movie, considering they’re still working on the script, it feels like it’s still going to be ages away. But it does sound as if it’s going to happen.
