'Knives Out': Rian Johnson Confirms Daniel Craig's Character Is Queer

First seen in “Knives Out,” Daniel Craig’s private investigator character, Benoit Blanc, quickly became a fan favorite with his slightly exaggerated Southern drawl and his unique methods for solving cases. Well, it would appear “Glass Onion,” the upcoming ‘Knives Out’ sequel, is not only going to show more of Blanc’s investigative skills, but audiences are going to learn a bit more about his personal life.

In a recent press conference (via Insider), after the London Film Festival debut of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” it was confirmed by filmmaker Rian Johnson that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc is, in fact, queer. This revelation comes after it’s shown in the film that Blanc is living with another man in what is seemingly a romantic relationship.

“Yes, he obviously is,” replied Johnson about Craig’s character being queer.

He added, “And there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.” This alludes to the cameo in the film, which is being kept under wraps for now.

Obviously, this is the type of revelation that is sure to anger a segment of the filmgoing audience who still thinks it’s somehow wrong/bad/confusing when they see two men involved romantically. As for the vast majority of people who watch the film, it’ll likely be a point of pride, as it will be one of only a few franchise-leading characters who are not straight.

It’s also refreshing to know that maybe with each “Knives Out” film (because the second one is definitely not the last), we might learn a bit more about Blanc and his personal life. The first film did a good job of hiding just about everything regarding the character’s non-investigative life. So, it feels as if this is definitely fertile territory to explore further.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will have a special one-week theatrical release on November 23 before it debuts on Netflix on December 23.
