It seems that Korean movies are something of a new flavor in Hollywood, as two remakes of recent flicks from the country are now in the works.
Deadline reports that family film blockbuster veteran Chris Columbus (“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire“) is set to remake “Hello Ghost” by Kim Young-tak. A box office hit in its native country, the film follows a man who tries to kill himself and upon failing is haunted by four ghosts who won’t leave him alone until he grants each of them one wish. Sounds like “Ghost Town” with four Greg Kinnears.
And it seems Koreans are obsessed with men who can’t kill themselves, as Deadline also reveals that Mark Waters (“Mean Girls,” “Mr. Popper’s Penguins“) is set to take on Lee Hae-joon‘s “Castaway On the Moon,” which also features a man who fails to kill himself by jumping off a bridge and ends up landing on an uninhabited island in the middle of the city. A reclusive girl spies him on her telescope and the two form an unlikely bond with the man urging her to finally leave her apartment.
Both remakes will be backed by Korean dollars with Next Entertainment World and CJ Entertainment taking on each film, respectively. You can check out the trailers for each after the jump and if we had to pick, ‘Castaway’ seems like a pretty charming story that could be good fit for an American redo.
