Do you remember the film “Return” starring Linda Cardellini, directed by Liza Johnson? No? Well, with TIFF around the corner now might be a good time to catch up with indie movie — a solid, modest portrait of one woman breaking down— as Johnson is moving on to bigger things with “Hateship Loveship.” It’s headed to Toronto and the first images from the effort are here.
Based on acclaimed author Alice Munro‘s book of short stories, “Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage,” Kristen Wiig, Hailee Steinfeld, Guy Pearce and Nick Nolte star in the multi-threaded tale that finds love and relationships colliding in interesting ways. Here’s the synopsis:
Johanna Parry moves to a new town to work for Mr. McCauley and his granddaughter, Sabitha. Sabitha and her friend trick Johanna into a one-way epistolary romance with Sabitha’s father Ken. Johanna lights on fire, and commits a criminal act to get to her lover, who barely knows she exists. Starring Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Christine Lahti, Nick Nolte, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sami Gayle.
With that ensemble it’s certainly one we’ll be keeping an eye out for, and making room for on our already packed schedule.
