Kurt and Wyatt Russell stopped by the Happy Sad Confused podcast recently to discuss “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters,” Wyatt’s upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie for Marvel, and more. But what does Kurt Russell have up next? He hasn’t starred in a film since 2021’s “F9,” so he’s due for a new film, right? Perhaps maybe his old pal Quentin Tarantino‘s final film, “The Movie Critic“?
When asked about QT’s upcoming project and his rumored involvement, Russell replied back, “I have no idea.” “I never know with Quentin,” said the actor, “he just calls up or someone calls up and says, ‘let’s go to work,’ and I love working with him.” Pre-production on “The Movie Critic” started in June, but things halted after the SAG-AFTRA strike got underway this summer. But now that the strikes are over, expect the film to start shooting next year.
As for the longstanding story that QT will retire after 10 films, Russell confirmed that’s been Tarantino’s plan since at least “Grindhouse,” his 2007 double-bill with Robert Rodriguez. “He said a long time ago, when we were working, when we did “Death Proof,” part of “Grindhouse,” he said, we went out one evening, Goldie [Hawn], Quentin and I, and we were talking and…during that conversation, he said, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna do ten, by the time I’m 60 I’m gonna pretty much be done,'” confirmed Russell. “And we had a long conversation about that which was really interesting. So, I guess he’s sticking to it. And he’s since talked about that, there’s reasons, there’s a long conversation there, but I think his reasoning is spot on.”
As for whether Russell will show up in “The Movie Critic,” who knows? Russell had a small role in QT’s last film, 2019’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” so don’t rule out the actor showing up in a similar bit part; Tarantino likes his cameos after all. “But yeah, if he wants me to carry the lead’s water [in “The Movie Critic”], I will,” Russell joked. “He’s just a fun person to work with, he’s quite amazing.”
So if “The Movie Critic” isn’t Russell’s next project, what is? Maybe a new turn as Snake Plisskin, the anti-hero of John Carpenter‘s “Escape From New York” and “Escape From L.A.“? When asked if he would the character for anyone else other than John Carpenter, the answer was a flat-out, “no.” No surprise there, since Russell and Carpenter are even tighter than Kurt and QT. “John Carpenter movies are John Carpenter movies, and that’s what’s fun about them.” So don’t expect Russell to show up in Radio Silence‘s upcoming “continuation” of “Escape From New York.”
