Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna are two of the biggest Mexican actors working today. Now, they’ll team up again for a new Spanish-language limited series for Hulu: “La Maquina,” a tale of boxing and the criminal underworld.
In the show, Bernal plays an aging boxer whose crafty manager (Luna) secures him one last shot at a title. However, for the pair to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force. “Daredevil” and “The Twilight Zone” scribe Marco Ramirez serves as showrunner for “La Maquina,” while Mexican TV and Film veteran Gabriel Ripstein directs the entire series.
The new series is the latest to stem from the budding relationship between Hulu and Searchlight Television. Searchlight recently produced the Elizabeth Holmes series “The Dropout” and the upcoming comedy “History Of The World Part II.” “It is a real honor to unite Gael and Diego onscreen again for “La Máquina”, their friendship and chemistry is a joy to experience,” said Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum in a statement. “And we’re delighted to be working with Marco, whose unique voice and vision allows us to explore this world in a wholly original way.”
Bernal’s recent work includes M. Night Shyamalan‘s “Old” and the HBO Max series “Station Eleven.” Upcoming projects for the actor include Marvel‘s Halloween Special for Disney+ and Amazon‘s “Cassandra.” As for Luna, he headlines Tony Gilroy‘s upcoming Disney+ “Star Wars” series “Andor.” He also recently provided voice work for “DC League Of Superpets.” He and Bernal first worked together onscreen in ‘Y tu mamá también.” The pair were also in “Rudo y Cursi” and “Casa de mí padre” together, among others.
Expect “La Maquina” to go into production before the end of the year for a late-2023 release on Hulu.
