‘A League Of Their Own’ Trailer: Abby Jacobson’s Prime Video’s Baseball Reboot Hits In August

There’s no crying in baseball, as the original movie classically said, but all the hardships that women endure, now and then, sexism, misogyny, racism, and bias you can think of are on display in the new trailer for Prime Video’sA League Of Their Own.” Yes, it’s a reboot, a reimagining of the original in series form—Hollywood would never let a good intellectual property lay dormant these days.  But it’s not as cynical as you might think and comes with a good pedigree, co-created and executive produced by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (co-creator and star of the beloved “Broad City”).

There’s also homophobia involved as well. “Queer people didn’t just come out of the blue at Stonewall,”  Jacobson, who, like Graham, identifies as queer, said in a recent Vanity Fair interview “I do think so much of the stuff we’re dealing with today and the way you talk to your friends was there.”

“We both loved the movie,” Graham said in a recent EW interview. “We grew up with the movie, and the more we started to explore the real stories underneath it, we saw that there was an opportunity here to tell a story that was broader and included a lot of perspectives that weren’t there the first time — but with the same sense of heart and humor and unpretentious fun that everybody loves about the movie.”

A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball, both in and outside of the AAGPBL. The show follows Carson (Abbi Jacobson) and Max (Chanté Adams) and a new ensemble of sharp and hilarious characters as they carve their paths toward the field, along the way finding their teams and themselves.

On top of Jacobson, “A League Of Their Own” stars Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Gbemisola Ikumel, Kelly McCormack, and Priscilla Delgado.

As previously announced, the series will premiere all eight episodes on Prime Video on Friday, August 12 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.  Watch the new trailer below.
