'Lanterns': Damon Lindelof Among Writers Brought In To Craft James Gunn's DC TV Series

While most of the discussion regarding James Gunn’s DCU seems to be on “Superman,” which is currently about halfway through production, there are still plenty of other projects at DC Studios that are moving forward, including, apparently, the long-awaited series, “Lanterns.” And now, we know some of the names of folks who are helping craft the series.

On Instagram, over the weekend, James Gunn confirmed the rumors that a couple of major names were leading the way on the TV series, “Lanterns.”

“Yes, it’s true,” said Gunn. “The ‘Lanterns’ DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof.”

Mundy, if you didn’t know, was the showrunner behind the acclaimed Netflix drama, “Ozark.” King, on the other hand, is a prominent comic book writer, who has been James Gunn’s creative right-hand man through the early stages of the DCU. And Lindelof is probably the best known of the group, who previously worked on series such as “The Leftovers” and “Watchmen,” as well as many, many other things.

“Lanterns” is a series based on the “Green Lantern” lore from DC Comics. The series is expected to follow the de facto space cop organization who uses green rings to help defeat bad guys. A series based on the “Green Lantern” comics has been in development for years now, predating Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios. Previously, we had Greg Berlanti trying to crack the code. Now, it would appear that “Lanterns” is a whole new series with no ties back to that original production.

With a writers room coming together now, you have to assume we are still pretty far off from “Lanterns” making a debut on TV screens. We’re probably looking at a 2026 debut, at the earliest.
