After myriad delays, reshoots, and more, the next (and potentially final) “Mission: Impossible” installment hits theaters on Memorial Day Weekend. But as anticipation heightens, questions abound. Will “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” be the box office juggernaut for Paramount that “Top Gun: Maverick” was three years ago?
The studio and star Tom Cruise certainly hope so. With a budget bloated to $400 million, the sequel to 2023’s “Dead Reckoning” must be a massive global hit to break even. And that means “The Final Reckoning” will likely need to become the “M:I” franchise’s highest-grossing film, surpassing the $791.7 million global take of 2018’s “Fallout.”
Are Ethan Hunt and his IMF team up to that challenge? Audiences find out on May 23, when Hunt and his fellow operatives hunt down Esai Morales‘ Gabriel before he can get his hands on the cruciform key that holds The Entity, a sentient AI threatening the world’s geopolitical order.
Along with Cruise and Morales, “The Final Reckoning” also stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Vanessa Kirby. Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, and Nick Offerman also have starring roles. Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Taran Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt round out the main cast.
Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct “The Final Reckoning” and co-writes the film with Erik Jendresen. McQuarrie also produced the movie with Cruise. Executive producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock.
So, will “The Final Reckoning” truly be Ethan Hunt’s final IMF mission? Maybe the new trailer for the blockbuster will provide some hints. “M:I: – The Final Reckoning” hits theaters on May 23. Watch the new trailer below.
