Got a Tip?

Lars Von Trier Returns With Dafoe & Gainsbourg For ‘Antichrist’

It’s been a long while since we’ve heard a peep out of the Danish enfante terrible and mischevious prick Lars Von Trier. Last we heard the short little provacateur had just finished his first true comedy, “The Boss Of It All,” and the filmmaker was left depressed, had checked himself in to a Copenhagen hospital and was mostly fresh out of ideas.

Even then (May 2007), he was unsure what he was going to do next. “I assume that ‘Antichrist’ will be my next film. But right now I don’t know,” Von Trier told the Danish newspaper Politiken; his rascally twinkle curiously absent. “After my downspin, I feel like a blank sheet of paper.”

Well, it appears that Von Trier is out of his funk as “Antichrist” is getting off the ground and has found a cast in leading stars Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg according to Variety. A CBC article from May 2007 said “Antichrist” depicts Satan, not God, as the world’s creator. Does this mean, he’ll be casting someone as good ol Beelzebub?

The psychological thriller/ horror was written by Von Trier with Oscar-nominated Danish writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen and centers on a couple (Dafoe, Gainsbourg) who retreat to the woods after their child dies (a typical Von Trier-like Disney romp, no doubt). Production will begin this month in Germany (maybe they should stop by and say hello to Tarantino). A February 2002 article in Twitch said that Von Trier hoped “Antichrist” would be his most commercial film and one that would ideally make money. Oh sure, we’re figuring this one will outgross “The Dark Knight” easily.
