We’re getting a reunion of sorts as “The Suicide Squad” co-stars Idris Elba and John Cena are back in the action-comedy genre for the new Amazon Prime Video film “Heads of State,” where the two extremely charming actors will play the British Prime Minister and President of the United States, respectively, who begrudgingly have to team-up.
Prime Video has sent us a trailer to share for the comedic actioner, which will be available to stream for subscribers this summer on July 2.
Joining Elba and Cena is a solid group of actors such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“Citadel”), Carla Gugino (“Spy Kids”), Jack Quaid (“Novocaine”), Stephen Root (“Barry”), Sarah Niles (“Ted Lasso”), Richard Coyle (“Coupling”), and Paddy Considine (“MobLand,” “House of The Dragon”).
“Heads of State” also boasts a rising talent in the world of action with Ilya Naishuller directing, who previously helmed the pulse pumping “Hardcore Henry,” Bob Odenkirk’s suburban dad action flick “Nobody,” and most recently worked on the motion capture for the video game “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl.”
An official synopsis for the upcoming streaming film, courtesy of Amazon:
In the action-comedy “Heads of State,” the UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) and U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena) have a not-so-friendly and very public rivalry that jeopardizes their countries’ “special relationship.” But when they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary, who proves more than a match for the two leaders’ security forces, they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can trust: each other. Ultimately allied with the brilliant MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), they must go on the run and find a way to work together long enough to thwart a global conspiracy that threatens the entire free world.
A DC Comics connection with the film’s male leads isn’t all that shocking, as the film has Peter Safran, the co-head of DC Studios, producing alongside Jack Richard (“Peacemaker”). Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query are behind the screenplay, which is based on a story written by Query.
