Lars Von Trier's 'Antichrist': More Photos, International Trailer

We didn’t realize that Academy Award-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) had shot Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist,” but these photos from Aceshowbiz via InContention remind us his gorgeous visual work will be fully on display in what will likely end up a non-traditional horror.

InContention seems to dig the ” ‘Brothers Grimm’-style atmospherics” of these bottom two shots (Willem Dafoe with the hose and presumably Charlotte Gainsbourg on the bridge).

But the stark, almost-Dogme like nature of the top shot (their two heads together) is pretty strikingly dramatic as well.

There’s no U.S. release for the film yet, but apparently it’s set for a May 29 release in Denmark, Von Trier’s native land.

“Antichrist” centers on a therapist (Dafoe) attempts to treat his wife (Gainsbourg) after the loss of their own child by retreating into a cabin in the woods, where they learn that their child might be tangentially related to the coming of the Antichrist. Basically, like many LVT films, it only goes from bad to worse for those that are already suffering. The twisty Von Trier seems to achieve great satisfaction for torturing audiences, but let’s hope there’s some sort of good reason why these characters deserve to suffer further indignities. The film will make it’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival which runs May 13-24.
