It feels like the Sundance Film Festival was ages, not months, ago. But the one selection we still cannot shake is “The Last Black Man In San Francisco.” The film was lauded by critics just a few months ago when it made its premiere in the snow-scape of Park City, UT. We had the opportunity to see the stunning picture, and you can read our review here. But words truly fail until you see the film for yourself.

Acquired by A24, “The Last Black Man In San Francisco” is the feature-length debut for director Joe Talbot. Talbot also wrote the film with its original story by Jimmie Fails, who also stars. The trailer is positively resplendent and offers a glimpse into a personal story. It’s lyrical and honest, while offering the harsh realities of the changing city. Along with Fails, the film stars Jonathan Majors, Rob Morgan, Tichina Arnold, and Danny Glover. This independent feature will not be one to miss.

Here’s the official synopsis and trailer:
Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. As he struggles to reconnect with his family and reconstruct the community he longs for, his hopes blind him to the reality of his situation.
A wistful odyssey populated by skaters, squatters, street preachers, playwrights, and other locals on the margins, The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a poignant and sweeping story of hometowns and how they’re made—and kept alive—by the people who love them.
“The Last Black Man In San Francisco” hits theaters June 15.
