Joss Whedon Calls Henry Cavill's Superman The "Best" Since Reeve & Somehow Still Enraged Zack Snyder Die-Hards

Filmmaker Joss Whedon has had his fair share of social media issues before, as he’s been at the forefront of fan interaction on the platform for years. However, you have to wonder what the writer-director was thinking when he opened himself up for criticism by mentioning Henry Cavill’s Superman (and thus summoning the wrath of the DCEU fans) in what was clearly aimed to be a complimentary tweet.

Whedon tweeted, “Cavill is a GREAT Superman – definitely the best since Reeves [sic], and could take the top spot with the right material/barber.” And yes, he does say “Reeves” but further clarified he meant Christopher Reeve and not George Reeves (who portrayed the superhero on the 1950s ‘Adventures of Superman’ series).

Seems harmless enough, right? Well, apparently Whedon hasn’t really taken a gander at the ridiculous number of tweets from those die-hard Zack Snyder folks who feel like the director who replaced their beloved Snyder is responsible for ruining “Justice League,” and thus, the trajectory of the entire DCEU. And all Whedon wanted to do was compliment Cavill.

But before we get to the outrage, it’s also funny to look at the tweet in another way. As has been pointed out on social media already, you can say that Whedon’s observation is a bit unknowingly (or perhaps knowingly) critical of his own work, considering he had a chance to provide “the right material” in his massive rewrite of “Justice League.” Of course, with that chance, he gave fans the CGI-enhanced Henry Cavill mouth that launched a million memes.

So, maybe these #ReleaseTheSnyderCut folks are actually onto something? Let’s hear what a couple of them had to say…

One such angry Twitter user replied, “You cut off the most Superman-esque scene of the movie. God knows how many great scenes like this were poorly reshooted by you with no reason.”

Another said, “He already had the right material. And unfortunately, it was the very material you ruined.”

And so on and so on and so on. You get the picture. The basic premise of their argument is that the actor was positioned to take the top spot as the very best Superman ever put to film until Whedon came along and derailed the whole thing.

While you can definitively say that “Justice League” has many faults (perhaps topping the list is the horrible facial CGI mentioned above), it’s impossible to know just how good Snyder’s version of the film would have been. And no matter how popular the hashtag is, it doesn’t appear that fans are going to get a chance to watch the coveted Snyder Cut. So, what we have in “Justice League” is what we will likely have forever, like it or not.

But yeah, Cavill could still be an awesome Superman, if WB is interested.

Here’s just a small sampling of the angry tweets aimed at Whedon for saying that Henry Cavill is the best Superman actor since Christopher Reeve:
