‘Legendary Star-Lord’: James Gunn Teases The Possibility Of Chris Pratt Getting His Own ‘Guardians’ Spinoff

While the ending of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” put a bow on a lot of the dangling storylines developed by filmmaker James Gunn, it did also tee up what is to come. Obviously, the ending set up a new Guardians team lineup and the possibility of more films with the characters, but there was also a scene that seemed to set up a potential spinoff project with Chris Pratt returning as Star-Lord. And it appears that wasn’t just a random scene, but according to Gunn, this was actually setting up a spinoff.

In the newly released commentary track for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (via The Direct), James Gunn talked about the ending of his film. As mentioned, storylines were ended and others were teased, but the very, very end of the film finished with a title card that said, “The Legendary Star-Lord will return…” While it didn’t mean much at the time—obviously Pratt’s time in the MCU isn’t completely done because he’s not dead and has never publicly said he was stepping away like Dave Bautista—we didn’t know what exactly that tease was setting up. In Gunn’s mind, it’s meant to set the stage for a potential solo film starring Pratt as Star-Lord, but this time, he wouldn’t be fighting in outer space.

“We always want to give somebody a little something special,” said Gunn. “And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord‘ movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.”

Judging by Gunn’s words, it sounds as if “Legendary Star-Lord” is a film that is already in development over at Marvel Studios. Of course, nothing has been announced and that very well might be the case. However, just because James Gunn said it in a commentary track doesn’t necessarily mean we should all mark our calendars and save the date for a Star-Lord solo film. Honestly, of all the stories set up in ‘Guardians 3,’ the one that is the least interesting (at least in this writer’s opinion) is watching Chris Pratt as Star-Lord figure out modern-day Earth. That just seems… dumb. Maybe that’s enough to carry a one-hour special or the B-plot of another film, but as its own big-budget, feature-length experience? Nah, I’m good.

That said, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is a massive hit, financially and critically, for Marvel Studios, a company looking for massive hits right now. So, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the studio quickly get a Chris Pratt-led ‘Guardians’ spinoff in the works sooner rather than later.
