Got a Tip?

‘Catherine Called Birdy’ First Look Clip: Lena Dunham’s Medieval Comedy Arrives In October

Best known for the HBO series “Girls,” Lena Dunham is making a name for herself as a filmmaker with films such as her recent Sundance entry “Sharp Stick” which was reviewed by The Playlist in January, and the upcoming film “Catherine Called Birdy.”

The latter is a PG-13 period comedy at Amazon Prime Video with an interesting British cast that consists of Bella Ramsey, Billie Piper (“Doctor Who“), Andrew Scott (“Fleabag,” “Spectre“), Joe Alwyn (“The Favourite“), Ralph Ineson (“The Witch“), Dean-Charles Chapman (“1917“), and with Dunham also taking a role.

Amazon has released the first clip for “Catherine Called Birdy” which you can watch below.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by author Karen Cushman published back in 1994. Dunham wrote the script in addition to directing.

An official synopsis reads as follows:

The year? 1290. In the Medieval English village of Stonebridge, Lady Catherine (known as Birdy) is the youngest child of Lord Rollo and the Lady Aislinn. Her playground is Stonebridge Manor, a house that, like the family, has seen better days. Financially destitute and utterly greedy, Rollo sees his daughter as his path out of financial ruin by marrying her off to a wealthy man for money and land. But Birdy, like all the great teen heroines, is spirited, clever, and adventurous, and ready to put off any suitor that comes calling in increasingly ingenious ways. Her imagination, defiance, and deep belief in her own right to independence put her on a collision course with her parents. When the vilest suitor of all arrives, they are presented with the ultimate test of love for their daughter.

Ramsey is also working with fellow “Game of Thrones” actor Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian“) in HBO‘s high-profile post-apocalypse series “The Last of Us” which is based on the popular Naughty Dog video games.

“Catherine Called Birdy” hits theaters on September 23 and October 7 on Prime Video. You can watch the first clip from the comedy below.
