Lily James To Play The Young Meryl Streep In ‘Mamma Mia 2’

Get ready to fall in love with Abba all over again. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” — the sequel to the smash hit 2008 flick “Mamma Mia” — is on the way. Much of the principal cast is returning, however, it looks like we’re going to get younger versions of their characters this time around too.

THR reports that “Baby Driver” star Lily James has been cast as the younger Meryl Streep. It’s intriguing news, though also a bit odd, considering the Oscar-winning legend has three daughters who are also actresses: Mamie, Grace, and Louisa Gummer. Maybe it’s a way to side-step nepotism, perhaps they don’t sing well, or maybe producers just wanted a (slightly) bigger start. Who’s to say, but it seems the most obvious path is the one not being taken.

Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski and Colin Firth will reprise their roles in the pic, which will likely get rolling as soon as Streep is finished with Steven Spielberg‘s “The Papers.” You’ll be able to sing to your hearts’ delight next summer, when “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” opens on July 20, 2018.
