Two New 'Lords Of Chaos' Teasers Give Glimpses Of Jonas Åkerlund's Film About Norwegian Black Metal

For many people, the story told in the upcoming film “Lords of Chaos” sounds too ridiculous to be true. But in fact, it is.

The film tells the story of the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal music seen in the early ‘90s. Founded by a group of young men in various bands, Norway became the hub of this up and coming musical genre that embraced violence, Satanism, and whatever else would get a rise out of the general public. But things didn’t go as planned, as the mid-’90s found members of this small group of musicians growing tired of each other, with tragic events unfolding.

As seen in two recent teasers (teaser 1 and teaser 2) for “Lords of Chaos,” the story of the bands Mayhem, Burzum, and Darkthrone is being told, albeit with a little bit of humor. This is a striking difference from how most view that era in Black Metal, which included murders, suicides, and church burnings. It’ll be interesting to see how “Lords of Chaos” rides the fine tonal line throughout the film.

“Lords of Chaos” stars Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Sky Ferreira, Jack Kilmer, and Valter Skarsgård. The film comes from director Jonas Åkerlund, who is probably best known for his incredibly long list of high-profile music videos he helmed.

Gunpowder and Sky is releasing “Lords of Chaos” in select theaters on February 8, before releasing the film on VOD platforms on February 22.

Here’s the synopsis, as well as the two teasers:

A teenager’s quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the 1980s results in a very violent outcome. Lords of Chaos tells the true story of True Norwegian Black Metal and its most notorious practitioners – a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning, and murder: MAYHEM.
