Word has been kicking around about the project for the last couple of days and now the trades have confirmed that Luc Besson is currently hard at work shooting “Into The Light,” a biopic on Burmese pro-democracy politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
It’s an interesting an interesting turn to political drama for Besson, the director best known for helming pictures like “The Fifth Element” and “The Professional” and producing work like “Taken” and “From Paris With Love.” Suu Kyi has spent fifteen years under house arrest in Burma after leading the National League for Democracy in an election victory of the ruling military junta in 1990. Her struggle gained international attention and last month, she was finally released from house arrest.
The picture is already well underway, with Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“) taking on the lead role, with filming recently wrapping in Thailand and with more shooting planned to take place in London and France. Things are moving quickly on the project and it’s expected to be ready by next spring or summer (hello, Cannes?). We’re definitely curious about this and glad that Suu Kyi’s cause will get even more light shed on it. Let’s just hope that Besson doesn’t use the story to turned into a “Transporter“-style action pic.
