A new film by Scottish director Lynne Ramsay is always a cause for celebration. And now, her first movie since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here” hits the market at Cannes, with Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh set to star.

Ramsay’s latest is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood‘s short story “Stone Mattress,” a revenge thriller set on an Arctic cruise. Moore plays a widow and retiree who meets Oh and other passengers on the luxurious liner. But when a seemingly harmless man attempts to seduce her, deep wounds in Moore resurface and lead to a shocking conclusion.
Amazon is already on board for “Stone Mattress,” and Studiocanal and Film 4 are in final negotiations, with Studiocanal shopping the film at Cannes. Both Amazon and Studiocanal distributed “You Were Never Really Here,” so no surprise they’re back in the mix for Ramsay’s next outing.
Lynne Ramsay loves to adapt literary works for her films. Every one of her four films except her debut, 1999’s “Ratcatcher,” adapts a story or novel to the big screen. That’s arguably part of Ramsay’s signature style and another reason to get excited over “Stone Mattress.”
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ramsay notes she’s wanted to adapt Atwood’s story since she first read it. “I was immediately gripped by the way it framed the deeply buried trauma of a post-menopausal woman – an age group we hear from all too rarely – through the dynamic and multifaceted character of Verna,” she says. “From its tongue-in-cheek humor to its moments of icy vengeance and delicate portrayal of an emotional repression specific to the boomer generation, it is a story I’ve wanted to materialize on-screen since my first reading.”
Ramsay’s four other feature films have all screened at Cannes, so it’s highly likely that “Stone Mattress” will do the same. Perhaps next year?
