Two years ago, “M3GAN” ended up an unexpected box office smash hit, raking in $181 million at the global box office (and in January, no less). Of course, that means a sequel was inevitable, but rumors of a follow-up to the sci-fi horror film trickled before it even hit theaters. Somehow, Universal and Blumhouse knew “M3GAN” would do well in 2023’s pop-culture zeitgeist, and that’s why audiences will get “M3GAN 2.0” this summer.

The original creative team and cast return for the sequel about an AI doll with killer dance movies (and murderous intentions). And like all good sequels, expect the follow-up to be bigger, bolder, and nastier than its predecessor. “M3GAN 2.0” sees Allison Wiliams‘ Gemma resurrect M3GAN to take on Amelia, a military-grade weapon built from the doll’s technology. Who will win this showdown between two bitchy robots with little regard for the human lives around them?

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady, now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.
“M3GAN 2.0” stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis. Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement round out the main cast.
Gerard Johnstone directs a script he co-writes with “M3GAN” screenwriter Akela Cooper for “M3GAN 2.0”. James Wan and Jason Blum lead producers via Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions, respectively, with Williams also on board as a producer. Executive producers include Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur.
