Got a Tip?

George Miller Hopeful To Revisit ‘Mad Max’ Universe After He Focuses On Two Other Projects First

We’re still a little shocked that last year’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had trouble finding success at the box office after “Mad Max: Fury Road” became such a landmark action genre experience and found new life with audiences after its initial theatrical release. Director George Miller has now revealed that while he still wants to tackle his third modern “Mad Max” movie, which was written a while back and was expected to be a Max-focused adventure, however, some other projects need his attention before “Wasteland” is considered as an option.

When asked by Vulture about returning to his wasteland fairytale universe, Miller revealed that a script is on a shelf (something we’ve known for ages) for a third chapter in the “Mad Max: Fury Road” saga but is “keen” to focus on two other mystery projects first.

“We’ve got another script. But having been doing this long enough where I’m habituated to storytelling, I find myself with way too many stories — not only in my head, but in the form of screenplays or at least very detailed notes that are within reach of screenplays,” Miller told Vulture when pressed about his other “Mad Max” movie that he wrote alongside “Furiosa.”

Then again, Miller isn’t sold “Wasteland” it’s a sure bet, “So, there’s lots of stories. Indeed, one of them is a Mad Max. It is not something I would do next, because there’s two things I’m keen to do next. But if for whatever reason the planets align, you can never tell. Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place and some don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see.”

Another option instead of another pricey live-action film could be pivoting to an animated project, which had been the original plan for “Furiosa” before they decided to do the project with sets, locations, and in-camera actors. It’s also worth noting after a contentious shoot, Tom Hardy has given the impression he wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon to the Max role leaving the door open for a recast (Tom Burke‘s Praetorian Jack in “Furiosa” was very much a Max surrogate).

Could “Wasteland” continue the saga or restart again? We’re still in the dark about all that.

While “Fury Road” and “Furisoa” have direct connective tissue, the franchise has sort of been known for having a different take on canon as each of the first four installments from the original to “Beyond Thunderdome” were considered standalone stories.

What are those two other projects that Miller teases? We’re not entirely sure given how Miller operates and is able to keep his gestating projects aggressively guarded within the Citadel. Stay tuned for any status updates when they surface.
