'Madame Web': Adam Scott The Latest To Join The Cast Of Sony's Spider-Man Spinoff

Another week, another casting announcement for Sony‘s upcoming spin-off to “Spider-Man,” “Madame Web.” Does it feel like someone new gets added to the cast list of this film every week? For the last month or so, that’s actually been the case, with five names announced since late May. And now, Variety reports that another joins their ranks: “Severance” star Adam Scott.

Scott just received an Emmy nomination for the hit AppleTV+ drama, so expect studios to be high on him for a while. But is “Madame Web” a good choice for Scott? The project remains a bit of a mystery beyond its bevy of casting news.  Dakota Johnson stars as the titular character, who in the comics is an elderly bed-ridden clairvoyant whose psychic abilities allow her to see into the spider-verse. With Johnson on board, this rendition of the character will surely be younger and more mobile. But after the trainwreck of “Morbius” earlier this year, does Sony know what they’re doing with their expanding Spidey-verse?

In any case, the cast of “Madame Web” sounds very intriguing. First, Sony announced Sydney Sweeney with Johnson for the movie back in March. Then in May, Celeste O’Connor joined the cast, followed by Isabela Merced, Tahir Rahim, and Emma Roberts in June. And last week, Mike Epps joined the cast, which brings us up to date with Scott. Sony hasn’t released who anyone plays outside of Johnson’s Madame Web, and production only started days ago, so what this movie is going for is anyone’s guess.

Other known factors of “Madame Web”: veteran TV director S.J. Clarkson makes her feature film debut with the movie. “Morbius” scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless write the script together, a red flag if there ever was one. And this film follows “Kraven The Hunter,” the next film in Sony’s slowly expanding Spidey-verse, which drops in theaters on January 13, 2023.

As for “Madame Web,” its tentative theatrical release date is July 7, 2023. Given the last six weeks, expect at least another couple of casting announcements before the month ends.
