In Spike Jonze‘s “Her,” Joaquin Phoenix found himself falling for the artificial intelligence (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) that came packaged with his new Siri-esque software. The upcoming indie “Operator” works on a similar premise, but with one very human twist.
Co-written and directed by Logan Kibens, and starring Mae Whitman and Martin Starr, the film follows a programmer who discovers his wife is the perfect voice for call center software. But things start to get tricky when he starts falling for the perfectly calibrated version of his partner he’s created digitally, causing strain in their real life relationship. Here’s the official synopsis:
An anxious programmer enlists the help of his empathetic wife when given the task to create the perfect call center program. However, their relationship spirals out of control when he begins replacing her with an ideal computerized replica.
While quirky on the surface, this looks like it’s got something to say about how men and women relate below the surface, and in addition to “Her,” this has a “Ruby Sparks“-like vibe as well. “Operator” opens on November 8th.
