'The Mandalorian' Trailer: A New Galactic Hunt Begins After The Fall Of The Empire

Stepping into the “Star Wars” Universe arguably requires a leap of faith given the amount of venom and vitriol Rian Johnson received for the inventive and beautifully shot, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” But the Lucasfilm siren call crying out to many of Hollywood’s most interesting directors certainly worked with Disney’s upcoming series, “The Mandalorian,” the first “Star Wars” live-action show of its kind.

A joint project brought to you by filmmakers Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) and Dave Filoni— not that well known outside of “Star Wars” animation circles, but the man responsible for “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” “Star Wars: Rebels” and the guy often seen as George Lucas’ true heir apparent— “The Mandalorian” is ambitious in its scale and features contributions behind the camera from directors like Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard and Deborah Chow (who’s done such a good job, she’s been asked to direct the entire upcoming “Obi-Wan Kenobi “series).

Utilizing Mandalorian armor, and presumably lore (both of which were created in Filoni’s aforementioned “Star Wars” animated series), but not Boba Fett, “The Mandalorian” looks like it’ll use “Star Wars” texture and familiar elements, but will establish itself as something more than just fan service (which is something a “Boba Fett” series likely would have been). It also positions a new step in a franchise looking for its footing after the beloved Skywalker Saga ends in December. By opening the universe up to stories outside of that storyline, new sagas can grow, and the possibilities of expansion into other areas are enormous.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

The “Star Wars” next chapter, “The Mandalorian,” arrives on to Disney+, November 12, but note that it’s not screening for press early, and Disney’s streaming service won’t adopt the binging model and drop all the episodes at once like Netflix. The show stars Pedro Pascal as the mysterious Mandalorian, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Werner Herzog, and more.
