Marc Forster To Direct Tom Hanks In 'A Man Called Ove'

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard any news on the new adaptation of “A Man Called Ove,” which stars Tom Hanks in the lead role. In fact, the last time we heard anything was way back in 2017, which feels like decades ago. Well, it appears that things are finally moving and the film is not only set to begin production later this year, but it also has a new director, Marc Forster.

According to Deadline, Marc Forster has signed on to direct the film, “A Man Called Ove,” based on the best-selling novel of the same name. The feature is expected to star Tom Hanks as the title character, a curmudgeonly older man who finds himself warming up to his new neighbors and their young kids. The film is set to be written by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee (“Life Of Pi,” “Mary Poppins Returns”).

“When I first read Fredrik Backman’s novel, I fell in love with the notion that friendship has the power to shape a person’s life,” said Forster. “I can’t wait to create a film with so much humor and heart alongside Tom and Rita.”

Forster is probably best known for his film work on projects such as “Monster’s Ball,” “Kite Runner,” “Finding Neverland,” and “World War Z.” His most recent film is 2018’s “Christopher Robin.” Forster is also putting the finishing touches on the upcoming feature, “White Bird: A Wonder Story.”

“Fredrik Backman wrote a novel that has entertained, moved and inspired countless readers through his character of Ove,” added producer Rita Wilson. “The humanity of the story has resonated with people all over the world, including myself. I have always looked for films that bring people joy and, hopefully, create a common experience of recognizing ourselves in others. It’s an honor to be producing this movie and to be bringing it to audiences everywhere.”

A release date for “A Man Called Ove” has yet to be announced, but production is supposed to begin later this year.
