So, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is in the bag—and we broke down everything that didn’t work (and did)—so might as well start talking about “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.” The film is due in theatres in 2016, and naturally, director Marc Webb is already being asked about what’s to come. With ‘TASM2’ laying down the seeds for Sinister Six, it would seem Webb has a slew of options, but it’s actually another character—one who hasn’t received a big screen incarnation yet—that he’d really like to bring to the table.
“Kraven,” Webb told Comic Book Movie. “Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting.” And it’s not far fetched to see this character in the mix.
Kraven The Hunter is a Russian immigrant and big game hunter, who decides that Spider-Man is the ultimate prey. In the comics, he works with this half-brother Chameleon to bring down Peter Parker, and is a founder of Sinister Six. So the baddie could certainly fit within the world being built by Webb and Sony for their comics franchise, and we’d wager the character might need some subtle tweaks to make sure he isn’t totally out of place in “The Amazing Spider-Man” universe (though let’s hope he has a better accent than whatever Paul Giamatti was attempting as Rhino).
SPOILERS AHEAD. Meanwhile, if you’ve seen “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” you already know that Gwen Stacy dies during Spidey’s climatic battle with Green Goblin. And while many have suggested Webb might’ve done better to go dark, ‘The Empire Strikes Back‘-style for the finale, he explains why he let Peter Parker eventually find a way to movie on.
“To me, I knew, even before the first movie, to the point that my involvement was predicated on the idea that we get to address this part of the comics. It was fascinating and what was daring and interesting about this comic. So I wanted to confront the death of Gwen Stacy. And I knew, and I believe, that you have to find meaning in that. That’s the job, especially when you’re dealing with kids, which is a huge part of the Spider-Man audience and was me, reading those comics,” he told Movies.com. “It was important to find meaning in loss and find meaning in that tragic event. And that required a dénouement. It’s what Aunt May provided for Peter Parker that gives the whole meaning.”
