Given that the cute three-minute video was the couple’s catapult to success, one would think that a full-length “Marcel” movie would have occurred almost a decade ago. Sure, there are two sequel shorts from 2011 and 2014, but Slate and Fleischer-Camp also divorced in 2016, so there’s that.

In any case, the feature film rendition of Marcel’s story hits theaters this summer. Is it five-ten years too late, or even necessary? Well, critics loved it at its premiere at Telluride last September, so maybe this is the strange, charming movie is what the world needs right now.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis, courtesy of A24:

Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. A beloved character gets his big-screen debut in this hilarious and heartwarming story about finding connection in the smallest corners.

Beyond Slate, full-length “Marcel” also stars Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Isabella Rossellini, and Lesley Stahl. Fleischer-Camp directs a script by him, Slate, and Nick Paley.
