Margot Robbie Says Her 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Spinoff Film Is Dead In The Water

Ever since she launched her LuckyChap production company several years ago, Margot Robbie has really controlled her career trajectory in a way that is admirable. She only works on projects that she is excited about and she definitely takes advantage of being a producer. So, with that sort of control and confidence, you don’t see Robbie take on roles she doesn’t fully believe in. That’s a long way of teasing the fact that Margot Robbie’s debut in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise is no longer happening.

In a profile from Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie talked about the various projects she has on her docket moving forward. There’s “Babylon,” which arrives this year. There’s “Barbie” coming next summer. And yes, she’s still working on an “Ocean’s 11” prequel film. But what about that “Pirates of the Caribbean” film that was in development with Disney and would potentially relaunch the franchise after the departure of Johnny Depp? Well, the studio isn’t apparently on board for her vision of the film, so she’s walking away.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie explained.

Originally reported back in June 2020, it was said that Disney was hoping to team with Robbie on a new ‘Pirates’ film that would serve as a spinoff of the main franchise. Then later, Jerry Bruckheimer said that there were actually multiple ‘Pirates’ films in development, one with Robbie and one without. No real details were known about the plot or anything, but apparently, Disney and Robbie couldn’t figure out a way to move forward.

Obviously, Robbie isn’t going to lose much sleep about losing out on this film franchise. She has plenty on her plate. Other than the aforementioned major projects scheduled for release or in development, she’s also one of the main faces in the DCU stable, playing Harley Quinn in multiple superhero films. Needless to say, we still have plenty of massive Margot Robbie projects in the works.

“Babylon” is set for release on December 23.
