You may not have known this, but Martin Scorsese had plans to film two new films back-to-back this year. “Had” is the operative word, however. Right now, it appears that both new films have been taken off the schedule and there’s no word on when we might see Scorsese actually film them.

According to Variety, Martin Scorsese has changed his plans for 2024 and is not actually going to film his Jesus Christ and Frank Sinatra films. People involved with both projects have been told that the original start dates have been taken off the schedule and nothing has been rescheduled yet.
For those that aren’t aware of these projects, let’s start with the Jesus biopic. For a couple of years now, Scorsese had teased that he wanted to make another biblical epic focused on the life of Jesus Christ. The film, tentatively titled “The Life of Jesus,” was set to be based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel of the same name. You may know Endō’s name because he’s also the author who wrote “Silence,” which Scorsese turned into a film years ago. “The Life of Jesus” was set to be independently financed through the filmmaker and would have likely gone international to film the project. No one was confirmed for roles, but Andrew Garfield is a name that was brought up as a possibility.
As for the Frank Sinatra film, many assumed this one was actually years away from going into production. It’s another project that Scorsese had been open about wanting to make. The report claims that a November start date for filming was planned, but that is no longer the case. And much like “The Life of Jesus,” no rescheduling date has been given.
It’s unclear if these two films are still in the works at this time. Perhaps, Scorsese is still planning on shooting back-to-back, but now it won’t happen until 2025. We’ll just have to wait and see. Unfortunately for right now, these films aren’t happening.
