This year is an interesting year for the Safdie Brothers. This is the year we finally get to see how they work separately. We have Benny Safdie working on “The Smashing Machine,” and then we have Josh Safdie working on “Marty Supreme.” Both are part of our Most Anticipated Films of 2025 list. And according to Timothée Chalamet, we know that one of them is still making films that feel like “Uncut Gems.”

In a recent interview on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast, Timothée Chalamet talked a bit about his role in the forthcoming Josh Safdie film, “Marty Supreme.” Not much is known about the film, other than it’s a loose biopic about Marty Reisman, a pro table tennis player. But in the interview with Von, Chalamet said this new film has a similar energy to what Safdie has done before.

“This crazy director, Josh Safdie, it has kind of that [‘Uncut Gems’] energy, that chaotic thing,” said Chalamet. “It wasn’t like a low energy shoot. This was like 16-hour days for three months.”
Not only were there long days, but Chalamet says that Safdie encouraged the actor to do a lot of his own stunts.
“He put me through the wringer,” he said. “I felt like he was testing me, early on. Early on, we had stuff that could have been done by stunt guys… and I saw him wanting me to do it.”
But Chalamet isn’t complaining. In fact, he believes Josh Safdie reminds him of a filmmaking legend.
“Josh is the real deal, man,” he said. “Seriously, Josh Safdie is the modern-day Scorsese.”
That’s high praise, indeed. We still don’t know exactly when we’ll get to see “Marty Supreme,” but it’s definitely one of our most anticipated titles, perhaps now more than ever.
