Got a Tip?

Marvel’s Kevin Feige Says ‘Captain Marvel’ Will Be “By Far The Strongest Character We’ve Ever Had”

While Brie Larson was announced as Captain Marvel with great fanfare this summer at San Diego Comic Con, movement on the actual film has been pretty quiet. In August, a shortlist of names to direct the picture emerged but thus far, no one has been officially signed, while we recently learned that the movie would be an origin story. But good things come to those who wait, and according to Kevin Feige, Marvel is working very hard to craft a compelling “Captain Marvel.”

“It’s very important to us that all of our heroes do not become silhouette-perfect cutout icons,” he told Vulture. “All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”

Intriguing stuff, but it all comes back to the execution, which again raises the question of who will direct. Feige says it’s likely they’ll have a filmmaker locked down by the end of the year, but they’re waiting to hear the right vision for the movie.

“…we have a…I don’t want to say a ‘road map,’ but we have a general view of what the movie is and then we meet with filmmakers and share that with them and then they pitch it back to us in a better fashion,” Feige noted. And once they hear that right presentation, the rest will follow.

“Captain Marvel” opens on March 8, 2019.
