Former horror magazine editor Dave Alexander has a new gig. Luckily for movie fans, it’s to uncover some of the greatest horror movies that never made it to fruition. Alexander launched multimedia production company Untold Horror, which is also the name of his upcoming documentary series.
The former editor is now set to write and co-produce “Untold Horror,” a new multi-part series that explores the secret history of why some of the most highly anticipated horror movies never made it past production – and, in some cases, development. From David Cronenberg’s “Frankenstein” to Roger Avery’s “Phantasm” script, the list of unmade horror movies is terrifying for all the wrong reasons.
Now, for the first time ever, some of Hollywood’s greatest horror movie directors discuss the movies they almost made. This includes interviews with masters of horror such as George Romero (“Night of the Living Dead”, John Landis (“An American Werewolf in London”), William Lustig (“Maniac”), and legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (“Ichi the Killer”).
Ahead of the release of “Untold Horror,” the production company has released a trailer. “I would say for every movie that I’ve actually gotten produced,” director John Landis says, “I’ve worked on 12.” We also get a brief look into what happened to Romero’s 1994 film, “Jacarando Joe.” In the trailer for the series, Romero talks about the recovered footage that was lost for nearly twenty-five years. “We actually shot it,” the director says of the mock documentary. “Somewhere … that film exists.”
