Purely from the point of spectacle, it’s been fascinating to watch DC Films flounder about, particularly in the last week. Whereas Kevin Feige has a firm grip on Marvel, sharing official news when it’s locked, and even managing to keep rumors at bay, Warner Bros. is strikingly far more chaotic with bits and pieces of news and rumors spreading out all over the place.
Just last night news broke that Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman” was not going to be part of the DCEU, only for that information to be quickly retracted. That morsel seemingly confirmed the director’s own comments from an interview last month, in which he described “The Batman” as a “standalone” movie. Turns out, that wasn’t exactly what he meant, and the filmmaker cleared things up today on Twitter:

Jeez, what'd I miss, guys…? 😀
Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe. Batman will be BATMAN…

In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman…

…not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn't be filled with cameos servicing other stories — that it would be a BATMAN story.

Okay, so “The Batman” is staying linked to the DCEU. However, the big question not answered here is whether or not Ben Affleck will be reprising his role following “Justice League.” While the actor went on the “I love DC Films” offensive at San Diego Comic Con, there still remains lots of doubt about whether not he’ll actually be back (and Casey Affleck didn’t help).
In short, the more things change at DC, the more they’re staying the same.
